Enterprise mobility delivers for United Fleet Distribution Print E-mail

United Fleet Distribution (UFD), the UK's leading driven vehicle delivery and collection specialist, has invested in an enterprise mobility solution from Derby-based TBS to radically improve their vehicle inspection process, reduce fuel consumption and carbon footprint, while improving customer service. The solution uses TBS’s award winning TaskMaster enterprise mobility software to improve management and communication between UFD and their 220 drivers via the use of handheld PDAs.

Each UFD driver now carries out vital 104-point vehicle inspections guided by the TaskMaster software on the PDA, replacing the previous paper-based process and improving the speed and reliability of the service. Drivers also use their PDA to log the start and finish time of each of their collections/deliveries, with all the data created transmitted back to UFD’s central IT systems from the PDA in near real-time. This is significantly enhancing the ability of UFD to update and inform their customers on the status of each delivery.

The accompanying reduction in paperwork is helping UFD to improve data accuracy and reduce the overall carbon footprint of the business. GPS Sat Nav technology is also integrated into each PDA, allowing the drivers to reach their destinations more efficiently and accurately record mileage. This capability has enabled UFD to target significant fuel savings on it’s 100,000 annual vehicle deliveries. Drivers also use the PDA to capture customer signatures and carry with them a compact printer to provide receipts for customers immediately.

TBS was selected to provide the solution following trials of a number of mobility solutions. It is also hosted by TBS, which accelerated the development process and avoided the need for UFD to invest in a costly server environment.

"Our drivers are our main asset and a huge part of our success, so to enhance their capabilities to such a degree has been a very important development for the business," commented Michael Hutchings, Managing Director of United Fleet Distribution. "TBS has provided a solution which has quickly delivered some enormous business benefits, with an impact on some very traditional business issues such as customer service, as well as some very current challenges, as in the case of rising fuel prices".

"TaskMaster helps our drivers to deliver consistency and quality in their inspection of vehicles by guiding them through a logical process, aided by the use of compulsory question sets."

"This is a very powerful use of enterprise mobility technology targeted at some of the most important daily processes carried out by UFD," explained Steve Reynolds, Managing Director of TBS. "As a technology investment, it begins to offer a return as soon as it goes live and UFD and their customers will continue to reap these rewards in the years ahead."
