Local authorities, like other parts of the public sector, are expected to respond to the Prime Minister's agenda for reforming public services. This is laid out in three key strategies and better use of IT underpins all three reform agendas;

  • The Gershon Review
  • Transformational Government Report
  • The Varney Report

Delivering transformed government

The Transformational Government strategy is based on making best use of your human and physical resources. TaskMaster will deliver improvements in both productivity and efficiencies of your field workers. However TaskMaster is also proven in helping local authorities reduce the number of building assets needed, in the case of the London Borough of Lewisham they were able to close down 2 depots, through their craft workers starting work from home and not coming into their local depot.

“TaskMaster is proven to increase productivity, efficiency and citizen satisfaction, whilst reducing the departments fixed costs”  Steve Reynolds Managing Director TBS Enterprise Mobility

Delivering duty of care

The Corporate Manslaughter Bill is also having an impact on Local Government especially around lone workers, who could be at risk. These workers can be monitored, by TaskMaster Personnel Safety Locator by GPS person tracking linked with a panic button facility. TaskMaster can also provide an automated safety system that monitors field worker activity when with a citizen, if no activity takes place within a specified time window after arriving at the citizen's property, then the TaskMaster Personnel Safety Locator will automatically raise the alarm to a potential issue. Reducing risk is an increasing priority, with TaskMaster an automated risk assessment can be included as part of the call work flow, thus ensuring that all field workers undertake an appropriate risk assessment before undertaking any job.

Energy saving (Carbon Footprint)

The Stern report recommended that we must make a concerted effort to reduce our carbon footprint now, as a result of this many organisations are planning and implementing ’green’ policies. The deployment of TaskMaster will reduce your carbon footprint.  In the case of the London Borough of Lewisham, they reduced their carbon footprint by 18.7 metric tonnes per year just through the removal of the paper process and a reduction in annual mileage travelled by each of their field workers by not having to travel to the depot on a daily basis, further significant energy saving were made by the closure of two depots.

TaskMaster® has proven benefits for Local Government. For example London Borough of Lewisham have implemented TaskMaster® for their housing and building maintenance division with great success. Their 200 craft workers maintain and repair 30,000 homes in south-east London. Key benefits:

  • Reduction in sub-contracted work -estimated annual saving £50,000
  • Reduced accommodation needs – estimated annual saving £60,000
  • Reduced paper and printing costs – estimated annual saving £6,000
  • Reduced visits / time in depot – estimated annual fuel saving £5,500

Additionally, paperwork administration has been dramatically reduced as paper job sheets are no longer needed.

"Now that updates automatically load into the CRM systems, we expect to free up four office workers from these sorts of duties and employ their skills in other areas" Jean Neville - London Borough Lewisham.

As the information is now provided directly to the 200 craft workers handheld computers, there is less need to visit the depot – estimated to save an average of 45 minutes per day per craft worker. The solution has been configured to provide information in line with the users workflow, quality and health and safety process requirements. GPRS data communications enable real time updates on the progress of jobs and the intuitive screens and menu options mean that completing work information (including signature capture) is easy.

"Craft workers often had little or no experience of using a computer, but they are adapting surprisingly well. The interface is easy to operate, with simple options on a touch screen. And they can do all their planning from home." Jean Neville - London Borough Lewisham.

The London Borough of Lewisham has further enhanced quality of service to tenants by deploying a sophisticated mobility strategy. Recognising the need to improve how its field craft workers received information about jobs when working remotely, they rolled out Microsoft Windows Mobile devices.
